Liver cancer Myth Buster #11 · Risk

If you have hepatitis B but feel completely well, you do not need regular check-ups?

✕ Not true
Fact

Hepatitis B can quietly damage the liver and cause liver cancer without any symptoms, sometimes even before cirrhosis. Regular check-ups catch problems early.

Hepatitis B blood testsBlood tests show whether the virus is active and whether antiviral tablets are needed.

Why people believe it

Many people are told they are "carriers" and feel healthy for years, so check-ups seem unnecessary.

What the evidence shows

Hepatitis B is the most common cause of liver cancer in India. Unlike most other causes, it can lead to liver cancer before the liver becomes scarred (cirrhosis). The risk is higher when the amount of virus in the blood is high, when there is a family history of liver cancer, in men over 40 and in women over 50. Blood tests show whether the virus is active and whether antiviral tablets are needed; these tablets lower the risk of cirrhosis and cancer. People at higher risk are advised a liver ultrasound and an AFP blood test every six months. In a large study of people with hepatitis B, six-monthly checks reduced deaths from liver cancer by about a third.

What you can do

If you have hepatitis B, see a doctor at least once a year for blood tests, and ask whether you need a liver scan every six months. Testing and treatment for hepatitis B are offered free under the National Viral Hepatitis Control Programme.
