Lifestyle and cancer
The World Health Organization estimates that between a third and a half of cancers could be prevented. Tobacco, alcohol, excess weight, inactivity, some foods and some infections are the main reasons. These pages explain what the evidence really shows, in plain words, for families in Andhra Pradesh.
Six pillars of a healthy life
Food, exercise, sleep, stress, social connection and staying free of harmful substances: all six depend on each other. A daily walk improves sleep, good sleep eases stress, and with people you trust beside you it is easier to cope without alcohol or other drugs.
Eight steps that lower cancer risk
- 1
No tobacco in any form: cigarettes, beedi, gutka, khaini, zarda or betel quid with tobacco. Quitting helps at any age.
- 2
Areca nut (supari) on its own, even without tobacco, causes mouth cancer. Do not let children start on supari or pan masala.
- 3
Avoid alcohol, or drink as little as possible. For cancer there is no safe amount, and alcohol with tobacco raises the risk even more.
- 4
Keep a healthy weight, especially around the waist. Excess body fat is linked to at least 13 kinds of cancer.
- 5
Move every day: at least 150 minutes of brisk walking a week, and less time sitting.
- 6
Fill your plate with vegetables, fruit, dal and millets; limit processed meat, red meat and sugary drinks.
- 7
Vaccinate: the free national HPV vaccine for girls who turn 14 prevents cervical cancer, and the hepatitis B vaccine given at birth protects against liver cancer.
- 8
Get screened: cervix and breast checks for women, a mouth check for anyone who chews tobacco, and bowel tests when your doctor advises.
Details on steps 1, 2, 3 and 7: Tobacco, alcohol and vaccines
The more of these habits you combine, the better. A pooled analysis of prospective studies found that people with the healthiest lifestyles had about 29% lower risk of developing cancer, and about half the risk of dying from cancer, compared with people with the least healthy lifestyles (observational data).1
This does not mean that people who get cancer are to blame. Cancer can occur even in people who do everything right; age, genes and chance play a part. These steps lower the risk; they do not remove it.
The bigger picture
In October 2026 an international Lancet Commission named 17 major threats to human health this century.
They include smoking, high alcohol use, obesity (counting poor diet and low physical activity), high blood pressure and poor mental health: the very things these pages are about.
The Commission says there is a realistic route to act on each of them.
Cancer is not a separate item on the list. The Commission left out threats such as heart disease and several site-specific cancers because it judged that they already receive enough policy attention and funding.
