Stage IV and palliative care myths,
answered with evidence.
స్టేజ్ 4 క్యాన్సర్, పాలియేటివ్ కేర్ – అపోహలు, నిజాలు
A stage IV diagnosis, or a referral to palliative care, often brings fear and misunderstanding. This series explains what advanced cancer means, the treatments that can still help, how palliative care improves comfort and quality of life, and how families can make choices that honour what matters most.
Five key messages
- Stage IV is not a prognosis by itself. Cancer type, how much there is, its molecular features, a person's general health and the treatments available all influence the outlook.
- Palliative care is not the opposite of cancer treatment. Patients can receive chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy or radiotherapy while also receiving specialist palliative care.
- Pain relief is a medical responsibility. Uncontrolled cancer pain should never be accepted as inevitable. Pain medicines, radiotherapy, nerve blocks and other treatments can usually improve comfort.
- Treatment decisions should reflect the patient's goals. The likely benefit of further cancer treatment must be weighed against side effects, time in hospital, cost and what matters most to the patient.
- Family caregivers need support too. Guidance on giving medicines, nutrition, watching for symptoms and recognising emergencies can prevent a great deal of avoidable distress.
