Social connections and cancer
People who feel supported by family, friends and community cope better with cancer, and research links strong ties with longer life. Here is what the evidence shows, and simple ways to stay connected during and after treatment.
The short answer
People with strong ties to family and friends live longer on average. Across 148 studies of more than 300,000 people, those with stronger relationships had about 50% better odds of survival, an effect comparable to well-known risks such as smoking.1
Friends and family cannot cure cancer, and no one should feel blamed for being alone. But support helps people notice symptoms early, reach the hospital on time, complete treatment and bear the strain.
What research shows in people with cancer
A review of 90 studies of more than 2 million adults found that people who were socially isolated had about a 24% higher risk of dying from cancer, and people who felt lonely about 9% higher.3
Among 9,267 women treated for breast cancer, those who were socially isolated had about a 40% higher risk of the cancer coming back and a 60% higher risk of dying from breast cancer.4
In a US study of 734,889 people with cancer, those with a spouse were less often diagnosed after the cancer had spread, more often received full treatment and were about 20% less likely to die from their cancer. The researchers believe support explains much of this; a brother or sister, a grown child or a friend can give that kind of support.5
Among 3,447 cancer survivors aged 50 or older, about half reported moderate or severe loneliness, and the loneliest had about a 67% higher risk of death.6
How supportive relationships are matters, not only how many people there are. In 4,530 women with breast cancer, being married was linked to lower mortality only when support was high, and the researchers noted that relationships under strain can also do harm.7
Support groups are not proven to lengthen life: in a trial of 235 women with metastatic breast cancer, weekly group therapy did not extend survival, but it eased distress and pain, especially for the women who were most distressed.8
Most of these are observational studies, so they do not prove that relationships themselves lengthen life. But staying connected is safe, costs nothing and is good for the mind.
Staying connected during treatment
Take one person you trust to important appointments. Two people remember more of what is said, and they can help with questions and decisions.
Asking for help is not weakness. Give each person one task: a ride to hospital, cooking, looking after the children or the paperwork.
On days when your blood counts are low after chemotherapy, avoid crowded places and people with a cold or fever, and ask visitors to wash their hands. Keep in touch by phone or video call rather than cutting people off.9
Cancer does not pass from one person to another through touch, hugs or sharing a meal. Visiting a patient and sitting close is safe.
Say clearly what you need: some days you will want company, other days quiet rest. Both are normal.
Your temple, church or mosque, prayer or bhajan group, neighbours and colleagues are part of your circle too.

After treatment
Visits often stop when treatment ends, and loneliness can be strongest then. Long-term effects of treatment can also make it harder to meet people.6
Return to work, study, hobbies and community life step by step.
Meet other survivors: ask the hospital about support groups or survivor meetings. Your experience can give courage to someone newly diagnosed.

How family and friends can help
Call, message or visit often, even briefly. You do not need perfect words; listening helps more than advice.
Offer specific help, such as "I will take you to hospital on Tuesday", rather than "tell me if you need anything".
Do not pass on frightening stories, untested remedies or "miracle cure" messages.
