Myth #04 · Causes & symptoms

Thyroid hormone problems do not mean cancer. Most people with hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism never develop thyroid cancer.

Myth #05 · Causes & symptoms

A thyroid swelling that doesn't hurt can't be cancer?

Myth #06 · Diagnosis & screening

Normal thyroid blood tests rule out thyroid cancer?

TSH, T3 and T4 measure how the thyroid is working, not whether there is cancer. Many people with thyroid cancer have normal hormone levels.

Myth #07 · Diagnosis & screening

Every thyroid nodule needs a biopsy?

Whether a biopsy is needed depends on the nodule's appearance on ultrasound, its size and other factors. Some nodules only need monitoring.

Myth #08 · Diagnosis & screening

A normal ultrasound means thyroid cancer is impossible?

A good-quality ultrasound is the main test for thyroid nodules, but no test is perfect. Suspicious findings on examination may still need further tests.

Myth #09 · Diagnosis & screening

A thyroid biopsy makes cancer spread?

Ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (FNA) is generally safe. Significant spread from a biopsy is exceptionally rare, and should not deter a biopsy that is needed.

Myth #10 · Diagnosis & screening

All thyroid cancers behave the same way?

Papillary and follicular cancers are usually "differentiated" cancers with an excellent outlook. Medullary and anaplastic thyroid cancers behave very differently, and are treated differently.
