Life after cancer

Treatment has ended. What now? This page explains follow-up visits, symptoms to report, long-term effects, staying healthy, the fear that cancer may return, and how to get back to everyday life, for survivors and their families.

Care continues after treatment

Care continues after treatment ends. Many people feel relief together with fear or loneliness at this point; this is normal.

More people than ever now live for many years after cancer, many for the rest of their lives. The aim is not only to keep cancer away, but also to live strongly and comfortably.

Many people feel this is the right moment to change habits. Do not try to change everything at once; one step at a time is enough.

Follow-up visits and tests

Ask for a written summary of your treatment and a follow-up plan: which cancer, which treatments, and which check-ups and tests, when.

Keep these papers, your scan reports and your biopsy reports together in one file. They help whenever you see another doctor.

In the first few years you usually see the doctor more often, then less often. The schedule depends on the type of cancer, so another person’s schedule may not suit you.

Go to every planned visit, even if you feel well. Write down your questions and any new symptoms beforehand.

Tell your team early if you notice

A new lump, especially at or near the treated area; a sore that does not heal

Weight loss or poor appetite without a reason

Pain lasting more than 2 weeks, especially in the bones, back or head

A cough, breathlessness, hoarseness or trouble swallowing that does not settle

Unusual bleeding, blood in the stool or urine, or a lasting change in bowel habit

A new headache, a fit, weakness, or a change in speech or vision

If you notice any of these, do not wait for the next visit; call or come earlier. Most symptoms are not a return of cancer, but they should be checked.

Long-term effects of treatment

Tiredness is very common and can last for months after treatment. Research shows that gradually increasing walking and exercise helps more than rest alone. Ask the doctor to check for anaemia, thyroid problems, poor sleep and low mood.

Some chemotherapy drugs and radiotherapy to the chest can affect the heart. Report breathlessness, swollen legs or palpitations. Keep blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol under control; in some groups of survivors, heart disease is a bigger threat than cancer.

Some hormone medicines (aromatase inhibitors in breast cancer), steroids and an early menopause can thin the bones. Ask the doctor about a bone density test, calcium, vitamin D and weight-bearing exercise if needed.

After lymph glands are removed from the armpit, or after radiotherapy, an arm or leg can swell (lymphoedema). Report swelling early, because treatment works best when started early. Using the arm normally and building up exercise gradually is not harmful.

After some chemotherapy drugs there can be numbness, tingling or burning in the hands and feet. Wear footwear, check your feet daily, take care not to fall, and tell the doctor.

Some people notice forgetfulness or poor concentration (“chemo brain”). It often improves with time. Writing things down, sleep and exercise help; tell the doctor if it does not improve.

Ask without embarrassment about children, periods and sexual life; help is available. Also talk to your cancer doctor about contraception and about when a pregnancy would be safe.

Staying healthy

No tobacco in any form, and avoid or cut down alcohol. They raise the risk of new cancers and heart disease. It helps whenever you stop.

Keep up the pillars of a healthy life: good food (to protect weight and muscle), about 150 minutes of walking a week, enough sleep, support for your mind and time with the people you care about.

Continue screening for other cancers (cervix, breast, mouth, bowel). Ask your doctor which ones suit your age and history.

Have your blood pressure, sugar, cholesterol and teeth checked regularly.

Ask your cancer doctor about vaccines. A yearly flu shot is advised for many survivors, but live vaccines are usually avoided during chemotherapy and for some time afterwards. Your doctor will tell you the right timing.

Older people need more protein, and some medicines (metformin, acidity tablets) can lower vitamin B12 and magnesium. Review your list of medicines with the doctor at least once a year.

Fear of recurrence and your mind

Many people fear “has it come back?” with every ache and before every test. This is very common and eases with time, but tell us if it gets in the way of daily life.

When fear comes, talking to someone you trust, walking and slow breathing help. Keep busy before test dates; searching the internet for hours can increase worry.

More tips, and when to get help, are on the Stress and cancer page.

Getting back to everyday life

Return to work or school gradually, and ask your doctor how much you can do. There is also help for children to return to school and play.

If money is a worry, ask the hospital help desk about the state health scheme (Dr. NTR Vaidya Seva, earlier Aarogyasri) and Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY.

Family and friends may think it is all over. Tell them if you still need time. Meeting other survivors and support groups can help.

Beware of false claims

Many people sell detox programmes, costly supplements and “superfoods” that claim to stop cancer from coming back. No single food, supplement or diet can fully prevent it.

Tell your cancer doctor before taking any herbal, Ayurvedic or other medicine. Some can harm the liver or cause problems with cancer treatment.

Studies show that people who choose alternative methods instead of standard cancer treatment are more likely to die. If you wish to follow traditional practices as well, tell your doctor and use them alongside, not instead of, treatment.

Myths and facts

✗ Mythచికిత్స అయిపోయాక ఇక పరీక్షలు అక్కర్లేదా?Once treatment is over, no more check-ups are needed?

This is wrong. Many cancers are more likely to come back in the first few years, and some can return later. Side effects of treatment can also appear years afterwards, so regular check-ups matter.

✗ Mythబాగున్నప్పుడు తరచూ స్కాన్లు, ట్యూమర్ మార్కర్ పరీక్షలు చేయిస్తే క్యాన్సర్ ముందే తెలుస్తుందా?Frequent scans and tumour-marker tests, even when well, will catch cancer sooner?

For many cancers, such as breast cancer, extra scans and marker tests in people who feel well have not been shown to improve survival, and they can cause needless worry. Follow the tests your team has planned.

✗ Mythక్యాన్సర్ తర్వాత విశ్రాంతే మంచిది, వ్యాయామం ప్రమాదమా?After cancer rest is best, and exercise is risky?

Exercise is generally safe; it reduces tiredness and builds strength. Start slowly, and ask your doctor first if there is a special situation such as cancer in the bones.

If you have thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life, please get help now. Talk to your doctor or someone you trust today, call the free Tele-MANAS helpline 14416 (24 hours, Telugu available), or go to the nearest emergency department or call 108.
