Breast cancer Myth Buster #16 · Treatment

Breast cancer means removing the entire breast?

✕ Not true
Fact

Many women with early breast cancer can keep their breast.

Why people believe it

Many women delay seeing a doctor because they fear losing a breast.

What the evidence shows

For many women with early breast cancer, removing only the tumour (breast-conserving surgery), followed by radiotherapy, works just as well as removing the whole breast. If a mastectomy is needed, breast reconstruction may be possible. Radiotherapy after breast-conserving surgery now often takes just one to three weeks of short daily sessions, not months.

What you can do

Ask your doctor: can my breast be saved? And if not, is reconstruction an option for me?
