Breast cancer Myth Buster #17 · Treatment

Does every breast cancer need chemotherapy?

✕ Not true
Fact

Not every breast cancer needs chemotherapy. Treatment is matched to the cancer.

Tumour testingLaboratory tests on the biopsy measure hormone receptors, HER2 and the grade of the cancer.

Why people believe it

Chemotherapy is the treatment most people associate with cancer, so many women assume it is unavoidable.

What the evidence shows

Every breast cancer has its own "ID": hormone receptor status, HER2 status, grade and stage, and sometimes a genomic test. That ID decides the treatment. Some women need chemotherapy; others are treated with surgery, hormonal therapy, targeted therapy or radiotherapy, alone or in combination.

What you can do

Ask your doctor what your cancer's "ID" is, and why a particular treatment is recommended for you.
