Chemotherapy destroys immunity permanently?
Many chemotherapy treatments temporarily lower blood counts and raise the risk of infection. Counts usually recover, although some treatments have longer-lasting effects on immunity.

Why people believe it
Families often keep a person isolated long after treatment, fearing their immunity has been destroyed for good.
What the evidence shows
Many chemotherapy drugs lower the white cell count, usually reaching the lowest point around one to two weeks after each treatment, and recovering before the next cycle. Blood counts are checked before each cycle, and injections that boost white cells can be given if needed. After treatment ends, immunity usually returns over weeks to months. A few treatments, such as some used for blood cancers or transplants, affect immunity for longer.
What you can do
Take sensible precautions when your counts are low, and treat any fever during chemotherapy as an emergency. Ask your team which vaccinations are advised, and when.
