Obesity and diabetes have nothing to do with cancer of the womb?

✕ Not true
Fact

Excess weight is an established cause of womb (endometrial) cancer, and type 2 diabetes is also linked to a higher risk.

Why people believe it

Weight and diabetes are usually discussed in relation to the heart and kidneys, not cancer, so the link is not widely known.

What the evidence shows

Fat tissue produces the hormone oestrogen, and excess oestrogen over many years can make the lining of the womb grow abnormally, raising the risk of cancer. Womb cancer is one of the cancers most strongly linked to excess weight. Type 2 diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and never having been pregnant are also associated with higher risk.

What you can do

Keeping a healthy weight and controlling diabetes lower your risk. Whatever your weight, report any bleeding after menopause, or irregular bleeding, to your doctor.
