A change in voice that won't go away is always due to a cold?
Hoarseness that lasts more than three weeks, or less with other worrying symptoms, needs a doctor to examine the voice box.

Colds, throat infections, shouting and acidity often cause a hoarse voice, so a persistent change is easily put down to one of these.
What the evidence shows
Most hoarseness settles within a couple of weeks. A hoarse voice that lasts longer can be caused by cancer of the voice box (larynx), especially in people who smoke or drink. Voice box cancer is very treatable when found early, because hoarseness often appears early, while the cancer is still small. Examining the voice box is a quick, simple test: the doctor looks at it with a small camera or mirror in the clinic.
What you can do
If your voice has been hoarse for more than three weeks, see an ENT doctor. Go sooner if you also have trouble swallowing, breathing difficulty, a lump in the neck, or you cough up blood.
