Every kidney cancer needs removal of the entire kidney?

Partial removal of the kidney can preserve healthy kidney tissue in many cancers that haven't spread, particularly small tumours. Removing the whole kidney is still right for some larger or complex tumours.

For small kidney tumours, surgeons can often remove just the tumour with a margin of healthy tissue (partial nephrectomy), keeping the rest of the kidney working. This helps protect long-term kidney function. For larger tumours, or those in the centre of the kidney, removing the whole kidney (radical nephrectomy) may be safer and more effective.
