Kidney cancer Myth Buster #14 · Surgery & local treatment

All small kidney cancers must be operated on immediately?

✕ Not true
Fact

Monitoring with regular scans (active surveillance) may suit some small kidney tumours, especially in older or frail people. Some patients may be suitable for ablation instead of surgery.

Any cancer seems to demand immediate removal.

What the evidence shows

Many small kidney tumours grow very slowly, and some are benign. For older people, or those with other serious health problems, regular scans to watch the tumour may be safer than an operation, with treatment if it grows. Ablation, which destroys a small tumour with heat or cold through a needle, is another option for some.

What you can do

Ask whether active surveillance or ablation could be suitable, and the pros and cons of each compared with surgery.
