Screening and prevention Myth Buster #13 · Screening tests

Everyone should have a full-body CT scan every year to detect cancer early?

✕ Not true
Fact

Routine whole-body CT is not recommended for healthy people at average risk, because the benefits are unproven and the harms include radiation and chance findings.

Whole-body CTInvolves a significant dose of radiation, and often finds harmless spots that lead to more tests.

Why people believe it

A scan of the whole body sounds like the most thorough possible check.

What the evidence shows

Whole-body CT scans expose you to a significant dose of radiation, and repeating them every year adds up. They often find harmless spots that lead to more tests, worry and sometimes procedures. There is no evidence that they help healthy people live longer.

What you can do

Ask your doctor about screening tests that are proven to help, rather than whole-body scans.
