Screening and prevention Myth Buster #14 · Screening tests

Colonoscopy is needed only when there is blood in the stools?

✕ Not true
Fact

Bowel screening can find and remove polyps before any symptoms appear. When to start depends on age, family history and other risk factors.

Why people believe it

Many people think a colonoscopy is only for when something is wrong.

What the evidence shows

Most bowel cancers grow from polyps over many years, and polyps rarely cause symptoms. Removing them during a colonoscopy prevents cancer. Screening, with a colonoscopy or regular stool tests, is usually advised from 45 to 50, or earlier with a family history.

What you can do

Ask your doctor when you should start bowel screening, and which test suits you.
