Thyroid cancer Myth Buster #01 · Causes & symptoms

Every thyroid nodule is cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

Most thyroid nodules are benign. Ultrasound features, risk factors and, when needed, a fine needle aspiration (FNA) decide which nodules need further tests.

Thyroid nodules are very common, and many are found by chance on scans, which can cause great anxiety.

What the evidence shows

Thyroid nodules are lumps within the thyroid gland, and they become more common with age; many people have them without knowing. The great majority, about nine in ten, are not cancer. Doctors use an ultrasound to look at each nodule's size, shape, edges and other features, and decide whether it needs a biopsy or just monitoring.

What you can do

If you have a thyroid nodule, have a thyroid ultrasound, and follow your doctor's advice on whether it needs a biopsy or a repeat scan.
