Thyroid cancer Myth Buster #04 · Causes & symptoms

An underactive or overactive thyroid automatically leads to thyroid cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

Thyroid hormone problems do not mean cancer. Most people with hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism never develop thyroid cancer.

Why people believe it

People with long-term thyroid problems sometimes worry that their condition will turn into cancer.

What the evidence shows

Hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) and hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid) are about how much hormone the gland makes. They are very common, and they are not cancers, nor do they usually lead to cancer. Thyroid cancer is a separate problem, usually found as a lump or nodule. Some people have both, which is why any nodule is checked on its own merits.

What you can do

Keep treating your thyroid hormone condition as advised, and get any new lump or swelling in the neck checked separately.
