Bladder cancer Myth Buster #02 · Causes & risk

Bladder cancer occurs only in men?

✕ Not true
Fact

Bladder cancer is more common in men, but women get it too, and their diagnosis is often delayed because symptoms are put down to urine infections.

Why people believe it

Bladder cancer is often described as a man's disease, and blood in the urine in women is easily blamed on infection, periods or menopause.

What the evidence shows

Men are three to four times more likely to develop bladder cancer, but many women are diagnosed every year. In women, blood in the urine is often treated as a urine infection, sometimes several times, before anyone looks for another cause. This delay means women are more often diagnosed at a later stage.

What you can do

Women: if you see blood in your urine that isn't explained by your period, or keep being treated for "infections" that come back with blood, ask whether further tests are needed.
