Bladder cancer Myth Buster #04 · Causes & risk

Drinking plenty of water completely prevents bladder cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

Drinking enough water is good for your health, but it doesn't eliminate bladder cancer risk. Evidence for a specific protective effect is inconclusive.

Why people believe it

It seems logical that diluting the urine and flushing the bladder more often would wash away harmful chemicals.

What the evidence shows

Some studies have suggested that people who drink more fluids may have a slightly lower risk of bladder cancer, but others have not, and the evidence remains unclear. Drinking water does not undo the effects of smoking or chemical exposure.

What you can do

Drink enough water for good health, but the most effective protection is not smoking. And get any blood in your urine checked.
