Bladder cancer Myth Buster #07 · Symptoms & early detection

If the blood in the urine disappears, the problem is cured?

✕ Not true
Fact

Blood in the urine often comes and goes. Its disappearance does not rule out bladder cancer or another important problem.

Urine testA simple urine test can show blood or infection, but a normal result does not rule out bladder cancer.

Why people believe it

When the urine looks normal again, especially after a course of antibiotics, it feels as if the problem has gone away.

What the evidence shows

Bladder tumours often bleed on and off, so the urine can be clear for weeks or months between episodes. Many people delay seeing a doctor, or stop follow-up, because the bleeding stopped. The cause still needs to be found.

What you can do

Even if the blood has gone, complete the tests your doctor recommends, such as a scan and a cystoscopy.
