Bladder cancer Myth Buster #08 · Symptoms & early detection

Burning when passing urine always means a urine infection?

✕ Not true
Fact

Burning is usually caused by infection. But burning that persists or keeps coming back, especially when urine tests show no infection, may need checking for bladder problems.

Burning is the best-known symptom of a urine infection, so repeated courses of antibiotics are often given without further tests.

What the evidence shows

Most burning and frequent urination is caused by infection. But some bladder cancers, particularly a flat, early type called carcinoma in situ, can cause similar irritation of the bladder. A urine culture test shows whether there really is an infection.

What you can do

If burning or frequent urination keeps returning, ask for a urine culture test. If no infection is found, or symptoms don't settle, ask whether further tests are needed, especially if you smoke or have seen blood.
