A normal urine test rules out bladder cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

A single normal urine test, or a urine cytology test that shows no cancer cells, cannot reliably rule out bladder cancer.

Urine testA simple urine test can show blood or infection, but a normal result does not rule out bladder cancer.

Why people believe it

A normal laboratory report feels reassuring, and people may stop looking for the cause of their symptoms.

What the evidence shows

Blood in the urine can come and go, so a single sample may be normal. Urine cytology, which looks for cancer cells in the urine, is good at picking up aggressive cancers, but often misses slow-growing ones.

What you can do

If you have seen blood in your urine, don't let one normal urine test end the investigation. Follow your doctor's plan for further tests.
