If bladder cancer has grown into the muscle, removing the bladder is the only treatment?
Removing the bladder is a standard option, but some people can keep their bladder with "trimodality therapy": TURBT, radiotherapy and chemotherapy together.

Why people believe it
Bladder removal is often presented as the only cure for muscle-invasive cancer, and some patients refuse treatment altogether rather than lose their bladder.
What the evidence shows
For cancer that has grown into the bladder muscle, removing the bladder (radical cystectomy), often after chemotherapy, is a standard treatment. For selected patients, bladder-preserving trimodality therapy, which combines removing as much tumour as possible by TURBT with radiotherapy and chemotherapy given together, can offer similar chances of cure while keeping the bladder. It needs careful patient selection and close follow-up with cystoscopy.
What you can do
If you are told you need your bladder removed, ask whether bladder-preserving treatment is an option for you, and consider seeing both a urologist and a radiation oncologist before deciding.
