Brain cancer is always inherited from parents?
Most brain tumours are not inherited. Only a small minority are linked to rare inherited conditions that run in families.

Why people believe it
When someone in the family has a brain tumour, relatives often worry that they or their children are next.
What the evidence shows
Most brain tumours develop by chance, from changes that happen in cells during a person's life, and are not passed down. Only about 1 to 5 in every 100 are linked to inherited conditions, such as neurofibromatosis, Li-Fraumeni syndrome, tuberous sclerosis, von Hippel-Lindau disease or Lynch syndrome. These families usually show other clues, such as several relatives with cancer at young ages, many café-au-lait (light brown) skin patches, or particular physical features.
What you can do
Having one relative with a brain tumour usually doesn't mean you need tests. If several family members have had cancer, especially at young ages, ask your doctor whether genetic counselling would help.
