✕ Not true
Fact

Men can get breast cancer. It is rare, but it happens.

Why people believe it

Breast cancer is so strongly linked with women that men rarely think of it, and many feel embarrassed to mention a lump in the chest.

What the evidence shows

Men have a small amount of breast tissue behind the nipple, and cancer can develop there. Fewer than 1 in 100 breast cancers occur in men. Because no one expects it, it is often found later than in women. A family history of breast or ovarian cancer, or a BRCA2 gene change, raises the risk.

What you can do

Men: if you notice a lump or swelling near the nipple, a nipple that turns inward, discharge, or skin changes, get it checked. There is nothing to be embarrassed about. Every man diagnosed with breast cancer should be offered genetic testing, because the result matters for his children and siblings too.
