Breast cancer Myth Buster #01 · Risk

Only older women get breast cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

Breast cancer becomes more common with age, but younger women can get it too.

Why people believe it

Breast cancer is often pictured as a disease of older women, so many young women assume a lump can wait. That belief is one of the biggest reasons young women delay a check-up.

What the evidence shows

Risk does rise with age, but breast cancer also occurs in women in their 20s, 30s and 40s. On average, women in India are diagnosed at a younger age than women in many Western countries. Most lumps found at 25 or 35 turn out to be harmless, such as a fibroadenoma or a cyst, but only an examination can tell.

What you can do

Know how your breasts normally look and feel. If you notice a lump or any change, see a doctor, whatever your age. A lump at a young age is usually harmless, but it should never be ignored.
