Breast cancer Myth Buster #02 · Risk

No family history, so I'm safe?

✕ Not true
Fact

Most women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of it.

Why people believe it

Many women skip check-ups because no one in their family has had breast cancer, and they assume the disease runs only in families.

What the evidence shows

A family history does raise risk, and some families carry inherited gene changes such as BRCA1 or BRCA2. But these explain only a minority of cases. In India, as elsewhere, most women diagnosed have no affected relative at all.

What you can do

Don't skip screening because of a clear family history. If a close relative on your mother's or father's side has had breast or ovarian cancer, tell your doctor. You may need screening earlier, and genetic counselling may be offered. If you have already been diagnosed at 50 or younger, have triple-negative breast cancer, or are a man with breast cancer, ask about genetic testing. A result can also help protect your sisters, daughters and sons.
