Cancer treatment Myth Buster #07 · Chemotherapy

Once chemotherapy begins, it can't be stopped or changed?

✕ Not true
Fact

Treatment can be adjusted, delayed, reduced or stopped when there is a good medical reason: side effects, how the cancer is responding, or a change in the goals of treatment.

Why people believe it

Some people believe that once they start, they are locked into the full course whatever happens, and fear starting at all.

What the evidence shows

Chemotherapy is reviewed before every cycle. Doses are often lowered or treatment delayed to let the body recover, and the drugs are changed if the cancer isn't responding. If treatment is no longer helping, or a person decides that its burden outweighs the benefit, it can be stopped, and care continues with a focus on comfort and quality of life.

What you can do

Talk openly with your team about side effects and your wishes. Don't stop or skip treatment on your own; discuss it first.
