Cancer treatment Myth Buster #15 · Targeted therapy

Targeted therapy works for every cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

Targeted drugs act on specific features or gene changes in cancer cells. They are used only when the right target is present, often confirmed by biomarker testing.

Biomarker testingLaboratory tests on the tumour, or sometimes the blood, look for a target a medicine can act on.

Why people believe it

"Targeted therapy" sounds precise and modern, so people assume it can be used for any cancer.

What the evidence shows

Each targeted drug acts on a particular feature, such as an EGFR or ALK gene change in lung cancer, HER2 in breast or stomach cancer, BRAF in melanoma, or BCR::ABL1 in CML. If the cancer doesn't have that target, the drug won't work. That is why testing the tumour, and sometimes the blood, is the first step.

What you can do

Ask whether your cancer has been tested for targets that could be treated, and what the results show.
