Cancer treatment Myth Buster #18 · Targeted therapy

A positive genetic test automatically means a targeted drug will work?

✕ Not true
Fact

Benefit depends on the specific gene change, the type of tumour, the drug and the treatment setting. Not every gene change found can be treated.

The genetic test reportLists the gene changes found; your oncologist explains which, if any, can be treated.

Why people believe it

A report listing a mutation can seem like a guarantee that a matching treatment exists.

What the evidence shows

Tumour genetic reports often list several changes. Some have proven treatments; others have no approved drug, or their meaning is uncertain. The same change can also behave differently in different cancers: for example, drugs that work well against a BRAF change in melanoma work much less well on their own in bowel cancer.

What you can do

Go through your genetic report with your oncologist, and ask which findings, if any, can be acted on.
