Gynaecological cancer Myth Buster #20 · Fertility & survivorship

Once treatment is finished, follow-up isn't needed?

✕ Not true
Fact

Follow-up helps detect any return of the cancer early, manage late effects of treatment, and support physical, sexual and emotional health.

Follow-upRegular check-ups find any return of the cancer early, and help with late effects of treatment.

Why people believe it

After months of treatment, many women want to put hospital visits behind them, especially when they feel well.

What the evidence shows

Most recurrences of gynaecological cancers happen in the first few years after treatment, and finding them early gives more treatment options. Follow-up visits also check for late effects, such as swelling of the legs (lymphoedema), bowel or bladder changes after radiotherapy, early menopause and bone thinning, as well as sexual and emotional well-being.

Your follow-up plan

  • Regular check-ups, often every three to six months at first, then less often
  • Report vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, leg swelling, or bowel or bladder changes early
  • Ask about bone health and menopause symptoms if treatment caused early menopause
  • Ask for support with emotional well-being and intimacy

What you can do

Keep every follow-up appointment, even when you feel well, and report new symptoms without waiting for your next visit.
