Head and neck cancer Myth Buster #18 · Treatment & recovery

Every head and neck cancer patient needs chemotherapy?

✕ Not true
Fact

Many early cancers are treated with surgery or radiotherapy alone. Chemotherapy and other medicines are used for specific situations.

ChemotherapyMedicines that kill cancer cells, given through a drip or as tablets, in planned cycles. Side effects are much better controlled today.

Why people believe it

Chemotherapy is the treatment most people associate with cancer, and fear of it keeps some patients from seeking treatment at all.

What the evidence shows

Treatment depends on where the cancer is and its stage. Early cancers are often treated with surgery or radiotherapy alone. Chemotherapy is mainly given alongside radiotherapy for more advanced cancers, or after surgery when there is a higher risk of the cancer returning. For cancers that come back or spread, newer medicines such as immunotherapy may be used.

What you can do

Ask your doctor which treatments are planned for you, why, and what each will involve. Don't avoid treatment because of fears about chemotherapy.
