Radiotherapy to the head and neck always leaves you permanently unable to swallow?

✕ Not true
Fact

Swallowing problems are a possible side effect, but modern planning, exercises and supportive care help many people keep their ability to swallow.

Why people believe it

Swallowing difficulty during radiotherapy can be severe, and stories of people who needed feeding tubes make many patients fear the worst.

What the evidence shows

During radiotherapy, the mouth and throat often become sore, and swallowing can be painful for a few weeks; some people need a temporary feeding tube. Most improve after treatment ends. Modern techniques, such as IMRT, shape the radiation to spare healthy structures, including swallowing muscles and salivary glands, where possible. Swallowing exercises before, during and after treatment help protect long-term function. Dry mouth and dental problems are other possible long-term effects.

Protecting your swallowing and mouth

  • Have a dental check-up before radiotherapy starts
  • Do the swallowing exercises your team gives you, every day
  • Keep eating and drinking by mouth for as long as it's safe, even small amounts
  • Keep your mouth clean, and use any mouthwashes or fluoride as advised
  • Ask to see a speech and swallowing therapist and a dietitian

What you can do

Ask your team what to expect, what support is available, and which exercises to start before treatment begins.
