Head and neck cancer Myth Buster #19 · Treatment & recovery

If a patient can't have surgery, the cancer can't be cured?

✕ Not true
Fact

Radiotherapy, sometimes combined with chemotherapy, can cure some head and neck cancers without surgery.

RadiotherapyHigh-energy beams, shaped by computer planning to fit the tumour and spare healthy tissue. Each session is painless and takes minutes.

Why people believe it

Many people believe a cancer can only be cured by cutting it out, so those who can't have an operation may give up hope.

What the evidence shows

For many cancers of the throat and voice box, radiotherapy, often combined with chemotherapy, is a main treatment given with the aim of cure, and it can help preserve the voice and swallowing. For people who can't have surgery because of other health problems, radiotherapy may also be an option for mouth cancers. The best choice depends on where the cancer started and its stage.

What you can do

If you are told surgery isn't possible, ask whether radiotherapy, with or without chemotherapy, can be given with the aim of cure. Consider a second opinion before deciding on a plan.
