Head and neck cancer Myth Buster #29 · Symptoms & early detection

A mouth check is only needed when there are symptoms?

✕ Not true
Fact

Regular mouth checks find cancers and pre-cancer patches before they cause pain. In a large trial in Kerala, mouth screening reduced deaths from mouth cancer.

Mouth self-checkOnce a month, in good light, look at and feel your lips, gums, cheeks and tongue. See a doctor for anything that lasts more than two weeks.

Why people believe it

People see doctors only when something hurts, and early mouth cancer is often painless.

What the evidence shows

In the Kerala trial, trained health workers examined the mouths of over 190,000 people. Oral cancer deaths fell by about a quarter, and by more among tobacco and alcohol users. India’s national programme offers mouth examination to adults from age 30, and a monthly self-check in a mirror takes two minutes.

What you can do

If you are 30 or older, and especially if you use tobacco or areca nut, ask for a mouth examination at your next visit and check your own mouth monthly.
