A blocked ear on one side in an adult is always just an ear infection?

In an adult, a one-sided blocked ear or fluid behind the eardrum that does not clear can be the first sign of a cancer at the back of the nose (nasopharyngeal cancer). The back of the nose needs to be looked at.

The tube that drains the middle ear opens into the space behind the nose. A growth there can block the tube on one side, causing fullness, reduced hearing or fluid in the ear. Other signs of nasopharyngeal cancer are a painless neck lump high in the neck, a blocked nose or blood-stained mucus, double vision or facial numbness. A doctor can look at the area in a few minutes with a thin camera passed through the nose. This cancer is uncommon in most of India but more common in the north-eastern states, and it is treated very effectively with radiotherapy and chemotherapy when found early.

If an adult has a blocked ear on one side for more than three weeks, especially with a neck lump or nosebleeds, ask an ENT doctor to examine the back of the nose before more courses of drops or antibiotics.
