Head and neck cancer Myth Buster #11 · Diagnosis & staging

A biopsy makes mouth or throat cancer spread?

✕ Not true
Fact

A properly performed biopsy is safe and essential for diagnosis. Cancer spreading because of a biopsy is extremely uncommon.

BiopsyA small sample of tissue, usually taken with a fine needle, examined under a microscope. It is the only way to confirm cancer and its exact type.

Why people believe it

Many people fear that cutting a small piece will "disturb" the cancer and make it spread, so they refuse or delay a biopsy.

What the evidence shows

A biopsy removes a small piece of tissue to be looked at under the microscope. For mouth lesions, it is usually a quick procedure under local anaesthetic. Cancer spreading because of a biopsy is extremely uncommon. Without a biopsy, doctors cannot confirm whether a lesion is cancer, which type it is, or plan the right treatment.

What you can do

If a biopsy is recommended, don't delay it. Each month of delay gives a cancer time to grow, and early treatment is simpler and more successful.
