Kidney cancer Myth Buster #17 · Advanced disease & survivorship

Immunotherapy cures every patient with metastatic kidney cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

Immunotherapy combinations have improved outcomes substantially, and some patients have long-lasting responses. But not everyone responds, and cure remains uncommon when the cancer is widespread.

Why people believe it

Families hear about remarkable responses to immunotherapy and hope for a cure.

What the evidence shows

Immunotherapy, often combined with another immunotherapy or a targeted medicine, can shrink advanced kidney cancer and keep it controlled for years in some people, and a few have no sign of cancer for a long time. But some people don't respond, and side effects can be serious, so careful monitoring is essential.

What you can do

Ask what response is realistic for you, how it will be monitored, and which side effects to report.
