Once kidney cancer spreads, surgery or radiotherapy can never help?

Some patients with a limited number of areas of spread benefit from surgery or stereotactic radiotherapy to those areas. Decisions depend on the extent of the cancer, medicine options and fitness.

Kidney cancer sometimes spreads to only a few places, such as the lungs, bones or adrenal gland. Removing these deposits, or treating them with SBRT, can control the cancer for a long time in selected people, sometimes delaying the need for medicines. In some people with spread, removing the original kidney tumour is also considered.
