Kidney cancer Myth Buster #06 · Symptoms & diagnosis

Kidney cancer always causes blood in the urine?

✕ Not true
Fact

Many early kidney cancers cause no symptoms and are found by chance on a scan done for another reason. Blood in the urine can occur, but not always.

Why people believe it

Blood in the urine is a well-known warning sign, so people without it may assume their kidneys are fine.

What the evidence shows

Today, most kidney cancers are found by chance, on an ultrasound or CT scan done for something else, such as tummy pain or a check-up, often while the cancer is still small and very treatable. Blood in the urine, a lump in the side, or pain in the side usually appear only once a tumour is larger.

What you can do

If a scan done for another reason mentions a lump or mass in the kidney, make sure it is followed up. Get any blood in the urine checked promptly.
