Kidney cancer Myth Buster #09 · Symptoms & diagnosis

A normal urine test or kidney-function test rules out kidney cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

Urine tests and creatinine can be completely normal even when a kidney tumour is present. Scans are central to checking a suspicious kidney mass.

Why people believe it

A normal kidney report feels like proof that the kidneys are healthy.

What the evidence shows

Kidney function tests, such as creatinine, show how well the kidneys are filtering. Even with a tumour, the rest of the kidney, and the other kidney, usually keep working normally, so the tests stay normal. Urine tests may or may not show blood. Ultrasound, CT and MRI scans are what find and describe kidney tumours.

What you can do

If you have symptoms or a scan has shown something, don't let normal blood or urine tests end the investigation.
