Kidney stones eventually turn into kidney cancer?

Ordinary kidney stones do not turn into cancer. Long-standing stones and inflammation are linked to some rare urinary tract cancers, but this is different from the common type of kidney cancer.

The most common kidney cancer, renal cell carcinoma, is not caused by stones. Very rarely, many years of stones and infection in the kidney's drainage system are linked to a different, uncommon cancer there. Sometimes a kidney tumour is found by chance on a scan done for stones, which is a lucky early discovery, not a sign that the stone caused it.
