A normal haemoglobin level rules out leukaemia?

Haemoglobin can be normal in some people, especially early in the disease. Diagnosis needs the full blood count, a blood smear and other tests.

Haemoglobin measures red blood cells only. In some leukaemias, particularly early chronic leukaemias such as CLL and CML, haemoglobin may be normal while the white cells or platelets are abnormal. Doctors look at the whole blood count, and at the blood smear under the microscope.
