Once liver cancer has been treated and the hepatitis B virus is undetectable, the antiviral tablets can be stopped?
No. People who have had liver cancer usually need hepatitis B tablets for life. Stopping them can make the virus flare and damage the liver.
Why people believe it
An undetectable virus level sounds like a cure, and taking tablets every day for years feels unnecessary.
What the evidence shows
Antiviral tablets such as entecavir and tenofovir keep the hepatitis B virus suppressed, but they do not remove it from the liver. If they are stopped, the virus can return within weeks or months, sometimes with a severe flare that causes liver failure. In people treated for liver cancer, keeping the virus suppressed also lowers the chance of the cancer coming back. Stopping is considered only in a few people without cirrhosis or liver cancer, under close specialist supervision.
What you can do
Take your hepatitis B tablets every day, even when you feel well and the virus is undetectable. Never stop them on your own, collect refills before they run out, and tell every doctor you see that you take them.
