Liver cancer always causes pain or jaundice?

People expect a serious illness to announce itself with pain or yellow eyes. If they feel well, they assume their liver is fine.

The liver has no pain nerves inside it, and it can keep working even when part of it is damaged. So a small liver cancer usually causes no symptoms. Pain, jaundice and weight loss tend to appear only once the cancer is larger, when treatment is harder. This is why people at higher risk are offered regular scans: to find cancer early, before symptoms start.

- Unusual tiredness, especially if you already have liver disease

Don't wait for symptoms. If you are at higher risk, keep up with the regular scans your doctor advises, even when you feel completely well. And if you notice any of these symptoms, see a doctor promptly.
