Liver cancer can spread to family members who live or eat together?
Cancer itself does not pass from person to person. But hepatitis B, a common cause of liver cancer, can spread within families, so family members should be tested and vaccinated.
Why people believe it
When liver cancer appears in more than one family member, people suspect it is catching.
What the evidence shows
Cancer cells do not pass between people through touch, shared meals or living together. Liver cancer sometimes affects several members of one family because the hepatitis B virus spread within the family: most often from mother to baby at birth, or through blood or sexual contact. Hepatitis B does not spread through food, water or hugging. A blood test shows who has the virus and who is already protected; those who are not can be vaccinated. Relatives of a person with liver cancer and hepatitis B may also need regular liver checks.
What you can do
If you have hepatitis B, ask your doctor to test your spouse, children, parents and brothers and sisters, and to vaccinate those who are not protected. Pregnant women should be tested so the baby can be protected at birth.
