Normal liver function tests mean there is no liver cancer?

Liver function tests can stay normal in early liver cancer. A normal result does not rule cancer out.

Liver function tests (LFTs) are the most familiar liver test, and a normal report feels like a clean bill of health for the liver.

LFTs measure liver enzymes and bilirubin, which show whether the liver is inflamed or struggling to work. They are not designed to detect a tumour. A small cancer can grow in one part of the liver while the rest keeps working normally, so the blood tests stay normal.

If you are at higher risk, normal LFTs are not enough. Regular liver ultrasound scans, as your doctor advises, are what look for tumours.
