Most liver cancers grow in a liver damaged over many years by hepatitis B, hepatitis C, alcohol or fatty liver. After Taiwan began giving hepatitis B vaccine to all newborns, liver cancer in children fell. In India this vaccine is given free at birth and in infancy under the national immunisation programme. Antiviral tablets keep hepatitis B under control, and hepatitis C can be cured. Stopping alcohol and controlling weight and diabetes slow liver damage.
