Lymphoma Myth Buster #07 · Diagnosis & staging

FNAC alone can reliably diagnose every lymphoma?

✕ Not true
Fact

A fine needle test (FNAC) may suggest lymphoma, but doctors usually need a larger sample, a core or whole-node biopsy, to classify it accurately.

Core or excision biopsyProvides more tissue than FNAC, so the pathologist can see the node's structure and run special stains.

Why people believe it

FNAC is quick and easy, so people hope it will be enough.

What the evidence shows

FNAC draws out a few cells with a fine needle. That can show something is wrong, but lymphoma is classified by how the cells are arranged in the node, and by special stains (immunohistochemistry) on the tissue. These need a core needle biopsy, or removal of a whole node. The exact type decides the treatment.

What you can do

If FNAC suggests lymphoma, expect a core or excision biopsy next; it is essential for the right treatment.
