Lymphoma Myth Buster #09 · Diagnosis & staging

A lymph node that lights up on PET always means cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

Infections, TB and inflammation can also light up on a PET scan. PET findings must be read alongside the examination and biopsy results.

PET scanShows areas of the body using more sugar than usual. Cancer can light up, but so can infection and inflammation, including TB.

Why people believe it

PET scans are advanced and expensive, so people often expect a bright spot to mean cancer.

What the evidence shows

PET scans show tissues using more sugar than usual. Lymphoma usually lights up, but so do infections, inflammation and, especially relevant in India, tuberculosis. That is why PET is used to stage lymphoma and check its response to treatment after a biopsy has confirmed the diagnosis, rather than to make the diagnosis on its own.

What you can do

Treat a PET result as one piece of the puzzle, and ask whether a biopsy is needed to confirm what it shows.
